Baltic House continued
>David Goloschokin
Baltic House Theatre-Festival is located in the historical center of St.Petersburg, near Peter and Paul Fortress - birthplace of the city. The Theatre incorporates two stages (Big stage for 832 seats and Small stage for 99 seats), as well as a number of non-traditional scenic spaces, rooms for rehearsals and exhibition halls. Infrastructure of the Theatre and its qualified personnel allow realization of various cultural events on a high international level.
History of the “Baltic House” goes back to 1936, when on the basis of two theatre companies – “Red Theatre” and “Theatre of the Working Youth” - “Leningrad State Theatre named after Lenin Komsomol” was founded in Leningrad. Time passed, original name was restored to Leningrad, it became again St.Petersburg, and in 1991 the “Leningrad State Theatre named after Lenin Komsomol” was renamed as well – since this year it is called “St.Petersburg State Baltic House Theatre”. It was also in 1991 that “Baltic House” theatre held the first edition of the Festival under the same name – “Baltic House” International Theatre Festival (by now this Festival, born under the roof of the “Baltic House”, has won the fame of one of the most important cultural events in Europe). Nine years later, in 2000, because of its successful work in the field of organization of prominent theatrical forums, “Baltic House” received a status of the Theatre-Festival.
Activities of the “Baltic House” Theatre always had an experimental nature, its scenic spaces often served as a creative laboratory for both beginners and skilled masters. Among the directors who once worked here one can find such famous today names as - V. Kozhich, M. Chezhegov, G. Tovstonogov, P. Khomsky, R. Bykov, G. Oporkov, K. Ginkas, G. Yanovskaya… On this stage played Yu. Tolubeev, V. Chestnokov, Å. Lebedev, Ò. Doronina, N. Urgant, O. Basilashvili, Y. Panich, N. Teniakova, I. Balter, E. Vitorgan, L. Malevannaya, O. Dal…
From the very beginning of its existence “Baltic House” had a special attitude to the works of modern playwrights. Whatever new and interesting appeared in dramaturgy, it immediately received a scenic life here. Plays by such famous dramatists as V. Rozov, A. Volodin and A. Vampilov had their premieres here.
Following its history, “Baltic House” still continues creative searches and experiments in all spheres of theatrical life – this remains the main idea of all its activities. Its playbill is stylistically versatile, it reflects both classical and contemporary world dramaturgy and includes performances staged by followers of various theatre schools and trends. Young and experienced directors from St. Petersburg, Moscow and various Baltic countries work on the stage of the "Baltic House". Co-productions with other theatres from all over the world are realized.
Today Theatre-Festival “Baltic House” is a big theatre holding including:
I. Four repertoire theatre companies named:
1. “Baltic House” Theatre Company
“Main” company of the holding (its history goes back to the days of foundation of the “Baltic House” Theatre in 1936); numbers 48 permanently employed actors; headed by Vladimir Tykke;
and 3 smaller resident companies (of 10-15 actors) which started living “under the roof” of the “Baltic House” not long ago –
2. Theatre “Farces” headed by Viktor Kramer;
3. “Experimental Stage” headed by Anatoly Praudin;
4. “Potudan” puppet-theatre headed by Ruslan Kudashov;
II. Foundation “Baltic International Festival Center”
Founded in 1995 by the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation, Committee for Culture of the St.Petersburg Government, Interregional Public Organization of St.Petersburg and Leningrad region "Branch of the Union of Theatre Workers of the Russian Federation", Baltic Bank and Theatre-Festival “Baltic House”. The Center was established on the basis of the International Theatre Festival “Baltic House”. “Baltic International Festival Center” is the constant partner of the “Baltic House” Theatre-Festival in the organization of various projects, by now these two organizations have actually almost merged into a single structure;
III. “Baltic Teledom” cinema company (makes TV programs on culture and theatre).
Hopefully in the future list of “inhabitants” living and working under the roof of the “Baltic House” will be extended.
