Centralny District M Nevsky Prospect, Gostiny Dvor

The St. Petersburg Philharmonic, the oldest Philharmonic in Russia, is almost two hundred years old. Its history goes back to 1802, when the St. Petersburg Philharmonic Society, the first one in Europe, was created. It organized the world premiere of Beethoven´s Missa Solemnis in 1824. Nowadays the philharmonic concerts are held in two halls: the Grand Hall (in the former building of the Assembly of the Noble), and the Small Hall (in the former Engelgardt House, Nevsky prospect, 30). Numerous renowned musicians of the 19th century performed here: Liszt, Berlioz, Wagner, Mahler, Rubinstein, Schumann, Viardot, and Sarasate, among others. The Grand Hall is one of the best concert halls in Europe. It is currently being renovated and will open again later in 2007.
