Pavlovsk
Land in the area by the Slavyanka River was presented by Catherine II to her son Paul in 1777 upon the birth his son, the future emperor Alexander I. The manor constructed there received the name Pavlovsk Village and subsequently became the residence of Maria, Paul's wife, after his murder. In the 20th century Pavlovsk became a city and for a short period of time changed its name to "Sloutsk", in honour of the revolutionary Vara Sloutskaya; thankfully, it soon returned to its original name. Now there is a working museum in the Pavlovsk Palace, but Pavlovsk’s main drawcard is undoubtably the large park – in fact more like a forest – surrounding the palace.
Designed by the Scottish architect Charles Cameron in 1780, Paul’s palace is an elegant, understated, neoclassical affair. Its location, overlooking the river and park, is unbeatable. The state apartments, which include the unusual, temple-like Greek Hall, the Hall of War, the Hall of Peace, and the Throne Hall, are highlights of the palace. After all of these halls you might like to relax in another one – the Great Column Hall – where a cafeteria/restaurant offers traditional Russian fare, along with a European menu.
The true attraction of Pavlovsk is its meandering 1500-acre park, replete with bridges, lakes, pavillions, and other such decorations. While it is just as well to follow your nose and get blissfully lost, you might like to keep an eye out for the Tsar’s Little Garden, Apollo Colonnade, the Tree Graces Pavillion, the Temple of Friendship and Paul’s Mausoleum, unoccupied to this day.
