The Piskariovsky Memorial Cemetery
The Piskarovskoe Cemetery is located in the northern pa rt of St. Petersburg. It was founded in 1930 and was named after the nearby village Piskarevka. During the blockade 470 thousand people and 50 thousand soldiers who did not survive the hunger of the blockade were buried here, and there is a memorial dedicated to them. Thus it is both popular with tourists and the memorial has a special meaning for the citizens of Saint-Petersburg.
In February 1945 there was a competition for the best memorial design and in 1956 the memorial was built under the direction of Levinson. In front of the entrance to the cemetery there is a marble wall which says: “Here, from the 4th of September 1941 to the 22nd of January 1944 fell 107158 bombs, 148478 shells were lobbed, 16744 were killed, 33782 were wounded, 641803 people died from hunger.” From the marble stairs leading to the eternal flame visitors enter a 480 granite alley. From there they can walk towards the monument “The Motherland”. There is a poem by Olga Bergoltz written on the monument:
Here lie the people of Leningrad.
Here lie the citizens – men, women and children.
Next to them lay the soldiers of the Red Army.
With their lives they protected
You, Leningrad,
The cradle of revolution.
We can not name all the names here,
There are too many under this granite wall,
But remember the one who stands nearby:
No one is forgotten and nothing is forgotten.
This cemetery is not only history, it is the pain of the Russian people!
