Strelna
The village Strelna and the Konstantinovsky Palace located inside it, can, without a doubt, be called one of the most interesting sites in the Leningrad region. The history of this suburb is unique: during the past three centuries it belonged to the imperial family, but none of its owners lived in it for a long time. First, Peter I wanted to construct a country residence for himself in Strelna, but construction went on for a very long time and ended only when the Empress Elizabeth ascended the Russian throne. At her instructions a beautiful park was created around the palace, however Elizabeth never visited Strelna. Later the palace became the property of Paul’s son Konstantin. Under Konstantin, the palace and park were restored, but the new owner didn't like living in Strelna either. The son of Nikolay I, who was also named Konstantin (and was, incidentally, a famous poet of the 19th century) was the only owner of the Konstantinovsky Palace who actually lived in it for a long period of time. After the October Revolution, the Konstantinovsky Palace was used for different purposes, but during the Second World War the entire place was almost completely destroyed. Attempts to rebuild Strelna failed and only in the beginning of the 21st century, before the 300th anniversary of St. Petersburg, the palace and park in Strelna were transferred to the administration of the Russian president and finally completely restored. Now the Konstantinovsky Palace is called "The Palace of the Congresses". It is the country residence of the president of Russia, and also hosted the recent G8 summit, but inside there are many historical objects, and it is a popular tourist destination.
